“Surround yourself with the dreamers, and the doers, the believers, and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see the greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.”

– Edmund Lee

Did you know that positive emotions can open up your mind to wider possibilities & choices in life? Well, that’s what the University of North Carolina psychology researcher Barbara Fredrickson has found through her studies.

Whether a dorm, rented, or a lovingly bought home, we all want to create a sanctuary where you can relax, feel safe, and be happy. These are the emotions that a home with a positive vibe makes you feel. Whatever be your design style, to bring positive energy into your home all you need is clean, bright, and airy spaces – not only physical but also mental ones.

Here’s how you can do it in a quick, practical, & no-extra-cost way.

LIST OF CONTENTS

Why is positive energy important:

Our thoughts control our attitude in life. Whether we take on any situation with full enthusiasm or let our imagination run wild with all that could go wrong depends on the type of energy that influences our thoughts.

Your home and the people you surround yourself with have a big influence on directing your thoughts. A cluttered home can make you feel emotionally drained & depressive. Would you prefer a bright, airy, well-organized room with soothing music playing in the background or the college dorm of a messy undergraduate with pizza boxes piling up under the bed?

Positive energy is important because it helps you –

  • focus more on the possibilities & opportunities in life
  • become more emotionally resilient
  • have a more practical approach to life by choosing to focus on solutions rather than staying stuck in the victim mode
  • explore your latent strengths & open up a wider horizon of success.

p.s. Latent strengths are the ones that show up unexpectedly when you’re in a fix. Like, jumping onto a shoulder-high dresser on seeing the hairy spider run towards you & later you couldn’t figure out how in the world did you do that : ) !

How can I get positive energy: 8 ways to bring positive energy into your home

1.         Light:

Pull up those blinds, tie the curtains back, & open up the shutters. Light & airy spaces have a way of lifting the vibe of any home. It opens up small spaces & makes larger rooms feel warm & inviting.

Bring in as much natural light into your home as possible. It creates a connection with the outdoors & lifts the mood up. According to research, winter blues or SAD (seasonal affective disorder) are caused at least in part due to lack of sunshine. So you can see how important light is to how we feel.

If letting in enough natural light is an issue because of the room’s design & positioning, add some fairy lights. The festive feel of those lights also has a calming effect on many. Get creative with them to blend in with your decor. It can be a subtle glow coming from behind a photo frame, lightly hidden behind an airy drape on the wall, or glowing tumbled inside a transparent glass vase.

2.         Air:

Open up the windows & let fresh air flow. If bugs are a problem, consider adding some netting. I was surprised to find stick-on window fine netting at a very reasonable price on one of the online shopping sites the other day. That’s really nifty, especially if you’re living in a rental, right?

Even if it’s really cold outside, let in fresh air even if only for a few minutes. The stale & toxic built-up air inside can really affect how a place makes you feel. Fresh air brings positive energy & is good for your health too.

Get creative if you have to, but add some kind of ventilation to a room that doesn’t have any windows.

Getting some plants that clean toxins from indoor air is a good idea. If you don’t have the time or taste for taking care of plants, get the hard-to-kill ones.

The snake plant can be a very good option as it can thrive in low sunlight, needs water very infrequently, has no leafy mess, & takes up very little space. On top of that, it cleans up a lot of toxins from indoor air.

3.         Dark corners:

Would you prefer to sit in a room that has dark corners filled with things untouched by human hands for ages? Or, would you feel happier in one with a floor lamp or an artistic vase displayed proudly in a neat corner of the room?

Even small things like dirt & clutter-free corners that are well lit, can add to the overall positive energy of your home. It affects us on a subconscious level. Corners are better left clean & airy but if you need to use them for something, keep it organized, clean, & well lit.

When you show your love & care to the whole place & not just the ones that ‘everyone can see’, it reflects in the vibe of that place. People feel invited & happy coming in there.

4.         Clutter:

Your home decor is an extension of your personality & so reflects your attitude in life. We decorate our home based on our likes & dislikes. Some of us like the cozy minimalistic approach while others might like the organized clutter look. The focus here is on ‘organized’.

Disorganized or messy spaces show a muddled thought process & lackadaisical approach to life. Visual clutter can make you feel stressed & disoriented. Living in such spaces isn’t time-efficient as locating something you need can take time. Plus, it isn’t financially sound as you end up buying duplicate things & wasting others.

To bring positive energy into your home, de-clutter it at least once a month. A de-cluttered home helps better movement of light, air, thoughts, people, and energy.

5.         Colors:

Here’s the thing. Choosing color schemes for the interiors for any home depends largely on the personal taste of its inhabitants. But as a general guideline keep soothing colors in sleeping & lounge areas, lively colors for cooking & dining areas while creativity-encouraging colors work best for work & study zones.

Interior color schemes affect our mood, thoughts, & how we generally feel at any given time. Understanding how colors work can help us better decide wall colors depending on the vibe we want in a particular room. The easiest way to decide on wall colors is to use pastels throughout sprinkled with some peppy accent walls.

Keeping wall colors light will allow you to play with décor and tweak according to weather or new style inspiration. It will make adding new elements easier without color clashes or heavy expenses.

Plus, if you are getting your home painted, try to choose brands that are eco-friendly & nontoxic.

6.         Outside-inside connect:

Bringing a bit of outdoors inside does wonders for the vibe of any home. If it’s possible to throw the french doors open, do that. If not, bring some elements in. Like, add fresh flowers, a small water feature, or a few plants.

They would instantly add an element of freshness, life, & personality. Bring positive energy into your home by adding plants. Choose from the hardy varieties if caring for them makes you feel hassled.

Green is a relaxing & calming color that helps de-stress. Plus quite a few varieties of house plants help remove harmful toxins from indoor air that can cause poor quality sleep, mood swings, breathing problems, and loads of other health problems.

7.         Music to bring positive energy in your home:

Let your favorite music list play at a soothing level in the background. It has a way of calming frayed nerves, uplifting mood, and bring positive energy in your home. Research and practice have proven that music has therapeutic effects.

Try facing the long commute or traffic without your playlist! According to studies done by West Virginia University’s epidemiology professor Kim Innes, music activates those chemical-producing parts of our brain that regulate emotion, attention, & positive mood.

However, playing gentle tunes on a loop at a soothing volume would be more effective than blaring the latest hits most of the time. Wind chimes or the sound of trickling water from an indoor fountain can also work if you aren’t in the mood for music.

8.         Seasons & weather:

The interiors of our home are meant to shelter us from the unpleasant effects of the weather outside while still helping us enjoy its beauty & idiosyncrasies. Bring positive energy into your home with decors that reflect all that’s beautiful, comfortable, & invigorating in nature outside.

And it doesn’t even have to be expensive changes! Just simple tweaks like the ones your wardrobe goes through moving from summer to autumn, winter, spring & back again to the warm sunny days.

The general idea is

  • Airy, cool items with minimal clutter in summer. ‘Less is more’ should be the motto. Go for airy fabrics for furnishings. Plush rugs, bulky decorative items, & extra cushions all go into storage.
  • Touches of floral & nature in the Spring months. Think fresh flowers, floral prints, & pastel shades.
  • Warm cozy furnishings are ideal for winter. Scatter plush rugs on the floor, extra cushions on the sofa, and a fleecy throw on the lounger for a warm and cozy feel. Switch stark white lights for the warmer glow of yellow.

If you wish to make your home feel like a sanctuary that relaxes & rejuvenates you, bring in elements that give you happiness. It is actually quite simple. Stay away from cobwebs, dingy rooms, stale air, dust bunnies, & piled-up stuff that attracts negative emotions.

Bring in light, fresh air, nature, & the colors that make you happy. It’s easy to bring positive energy into your home, thoughts, & life once you realize what truly makes you feel happy & inspired.
